Literacy Grant application:  Deanna was asked if she will continue to lead this Rotary Program with her answer being ‘Yes.  Club members were asked to support Deanna.  Past Club efforts have only involved 3-4 members and a much more inclusive effort is needed.  Deanna will go ahead and ask area non-profits to present their requests on August 24th.

Marilyn’s message began with her childhood memories of growing up in an active Rotary household and included her Rotary membership starting in the early 1990’s right after women were allowed to join.   She carried to us the RI Presidential message for family and health issues as well as ‘ good communities build good Nations.”

Club Presidents need to adapt to change with meeting times, projects, technology ie, Facebook, that may be risky but do promise success in our Rotary Club.   MEMBERSHIP starts with an invite.  Constant rebirth is necessary thru youth memberships.

Rotary Foundation: Paul Harris Fellowships are one of the major sources of funding for RI Projects- Polio Plus, water projects, literacy grants, microcredit loans and grants to Clubs and District Projects.  Large and small donations all help.

A polio immunization costs $0.60.  Polio is still present in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Children are being saved by Rotarian’s efforts.

Raffle was won by Cindy Locke.  She pulled the nine of hearts-not the winner.

The youth learn math and science skills along the way.  A School Partnership Program has been developed with area high schools or tech centers for all or part of the school year and gives chosen at risk youth hands on and academic skills and self confidence to stay in school.  100 to 400 youth are involved each year.

Tim said that historically Fisher Bridge in Wolcott received attention from the Morrisville Rotary.  He suggested we schedule a work day there one Saturday in August. Howard said they had mowed it twice and someone was mowing it again today as they went through to other places. He said they would continue to do that this summer. Gary suggested we check on the port-a-let again this year. Tim said he would call Linda in Wolcott about it.

Cindy mentioned we should be part of a sign going into Morrisville now that the truck route was going in. Tricia suggested a grant.

Sharon let folks know that Pablo went home Sunday. She expects to see him back again someday. Tim said that Phil Grant was concerned we only had the first 3 months of the new exchange student’s housing set up and that he wanted the  first 6 months figured out before she came. The deadline is tomorrow. Linnea said they might consider it.

Tim welcomed Amy Touchette from Justice for Dogs. She introduced Jimmy as her helper.  Amy explained that Justice For Dogs was started in 2007 and is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. They serve the area around Lamoille County and are located in Wolcott. She said they take dogs and cats (stray and feral only), work with them, spay/neuter them, and put them up for adoption. They are an all volunteer rescued group for dogs. They board their dogs at local boarding facilities for free. They work with Stowe Veterinary service for low cost services. They also provide seniors with transportation for pets to/from vets, give food to seniors and the poor to help pets stay in their homes, and investigate cruelty to pet complaints. They provide education for the care of pets and prevention of bites (how to approach a dog, for example). They also provide housing for pets when domestic violent issues require pets to be taken (such as when someone goes into a shelter).  The provide programs in schools. They are a huge resource for information, fielding approximately 20 calls a day!

They have a website: www.justicefordogsvt.org and they use petfinder to market their pets for adoption: http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?&shelterid=VT54&preview=1

Tim thanked her for coming to talk.

The winning ticket was held by Geoffrey, but he did not pick the ace of spades.

May 25, 2011 Meeting Press Release

May 25th, 2011 No comments

Morrisville Rotarians traveled to Hardwick and learned from Andrew Meyer, Larry Hamel and Mary Gagnon of their joint efforts to bring vitality, business and new residents to down town Hardwick.

Andrew spoke of using his agricultural background and years in Washington DC. with Vermont Senator James Jeffords to start soybean based manufacturing businesses in and around Hardwick.  The collaboration of himself with Jasper Hill Cheese , High Moving Seeds, and others are producing high value foods and bringing reporters from the New York Times, Boston Globe and other media to share with their readers the products coming from Northeastern Vermont.

Larry and Lise Hamel have renovated two village landmarks and have one more building in the works! The Hardwick Selectboard, local bank loans and grants have enabled them to offer clean and bright retail and residential space that is nearly all leased.  Lunch today was from Connie’s Kitchen which is one of Larry’s tenants in the Hardwick Inn.

Mary and her husband support Andrew’s and Larry’s efforts and operate a video store-in this age of DVD’s and Netflix’s.  Hardwick is well on its way to being an agricultural business haven for its residents and the buying public.
