March 29, 2010 Meeting Minutes

March 29th, 2010

Present: Ted Lambert, Tim Sargent, Jason McArthur, Patti Coultas, Sharon Menard, Gary Nolan, Davis Koier, Marcia Marble, Mary Metcalf, Phil Chiaravalle, and Jim Mahoney,

Tim collected happy dollars from: Ted, Sharon, Patti, Jim, Dr. Phil, Tim, Gary, Jason

Tim proposed a fine on Jason because he cut him in the lunch line. Jim went on record of opposing the fine on Tim last week. Gary seconded the proposed fine. The motion failed, Tim paid $1and the $1 for the fine from when he was out of town. Jason said it was good to have Tim back.

There was discussion on a calendar both on the web site and on paper. Tim said he would bring a paper calendar in too. Jim reminded the members that in the past they rotated who would invite a speaker. He liked that because it brought in a wide range of speakers. Patti said she was willing to be the scheduler and keep the web site up to date.

It was decided not to have a meeting on April 27th since we were meeting with the Stowe Rotary on April 22nd and we already have a speaker lined up for April 20th.

Tim reported that the PETS sessions were inspiring. He said that many clubs are losing members and the trend seems to be to move to a breakfast meeting.

He explained how the annual dues are distributed

  • Rotary International    $49
  • Insurance                     $  2
  • Magazine                     $12
  • District                                    $40
  • Insurance                     $  4
  • PETS Training divided by number of active members we have

Tim was thinking he would spend more time on membership as his goal. He thought he would have the goal of 10 new members. Others thought this was very ambitious.

Jim also suggested Tim look at what he has to do for the Presidential Citation and think about a goal to help him meet the citation.

Tim asked if the club had advertised the new meeting date. Marcia said it was in the Stowe Reporter last week. She also sent it to the News and Citizen and Hardwick Gazette but hasn’t seen it yet.

Mentoring of new members was discussed. Mary said she had information for mentors that she would bring in.

Jim asked if there were changeover ideas. Ted suggested there was club money available for this ceremony.

A “Friends of Rotary” category was discussed for people who cannot make meetings but want to stay involved.

Jason suggested we do not have defined committees. He is still unclear what committees we have and their responsibilities.

Marcia said that we are still planning to do the Dictionary Project with Morrisville, Hyde Park and Wolcott. Next year hopefully Eden too. (dictionaries for 4th graders)

Tim said he has talked more about the Dancing with Stars idea. Jason said his fiancé has offered to tutor folks who are going to dance. Tim said he heard an idea of buying tickets for each dancer you like best.

Marcia said to plan an August joint meeting with the Fish and Game Club. July perhaps do something at Marble Pond.

The 50/50 ticket was drawn, and Tim/Jason had the ticket but did not draw the 4 of diamonds.

March 22nd, 2010

Present: Susan Bartlett, Rich Furlong, Phil Chiaravalle, Marcia Marble, Mary Metcalf, Marci Henderson, Jim Mahoney, Davis Koier, Mel Patashnick, Gary Nolan, Sharon Menard, Ted Lambert, Patti Coultas, and Jason McArthur.

Guest: Brice Simon, Stowe Rotary

Davis collected happy dollars from: Susan, Brice, Jim, Marci ($2), Marcia, Rich, Patti, Sharon, Gary, Mel ($2), Ted, Davis.

Jason proposed a fine on Tim for being in sunny Costa Rica. Susan Seconded it. It passed and Jason paid it for him.

Susan proposed that as we transition to Tuesday morning meetings (from 7-8am) that we continue to have committee meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. The members concurred.

Gary said that Linda at Stone Grill told him that no one had confirmed the food arrangements with her for the morning meetings. Jim said he would work with Tim to ensure that happens.

Gary said that he received notice it is time to think about the Duck Race and Lamoille County Field Days again. Should we do it there or at the July 4th celebration. This will be discussed at the next committee meeting (April 6th)

Susan reminded the members to register for the Montreal International Rotary Meeting if they are going to do so. The meeting will never again be this close. They are working on a coach bus for transportation.

Brice was welcomed to the meeting.

Brice explained that the Bishop Marshall School had requested funds to support a low income student in the golf program. He said that they had agreed to $200 and were asking other clubs to consider matching their gift.

Brice explained that there had been some discussion about the Morrisville Rotary joining the Stowe Rotary in April. He said that Thursday, April 22nd would work for that. They start the evening at 6:30 with a meet and greet then start the meeting at 7pm. It is held at the Town and Country in Stowe. Dinner is $15. He said that he and several of the members have fun teasing each other about wearing ties. He would be grateful if we all wore ties (both the men and women).

Brice said that they would like to try partnering with us to sell ads in the Octoberfest pamphlet. This was tried several years ago and did not work out as well. He’s interested in trying again. The idea would be that for every ad we sell we would get 40% of the proceeds, they would get 40% and 20% would be toward expenses. There is a list he can send that shows who already purchases ads. Jim said he was interested in partnering in that. Brice said he would send logistics so we can discuss it.

The 50/50 ticket was drawn, and Mary had the ticket but did not draw the 4 of diamonds.

Davis opened the meeting and welcomed the guests.

Marc proposed a fine on Jim Mahoney for not attending Town Meeting and doing his civic duty. Marcia seconded the motion. Jim defended himself by saying for 5 years he was moderator and needed a break this year from it. The motion was defeated. Marc had to pay $1 for bringing it to the members.

Marci had an update about the international convention. She passed it around for everyone to see.

Davis welcomed Barbara Murphy again and invited her to talk to the members.

Barbara spoke mostly on the activities Johnson State College has connecting to the community. These include United Way fundraisers, food shelf work, and blood drives. Additionally, there are many individual class projects that provide community service. One project is an environmental science department wide project on the Lamoille Valley River shed.  She went on to list many other projects.  There are also activities that take JSC students outside this community, such as work in New Orleans and the Bronx.  Barbara invited us to a showcase of all the community events that they do on April 16th at 10:30am in the gym.

Ted invited both Barbara Murphy and Dan Regan to join the Morrisville Rotary, and explained the change in meeting times.

Gary chose a new card to be the card we will be looking for in the lottery. It will be a 4 of diamonds. The ticket was then drawn, and Marci had the ticket but did not draw the 4 of diamonds.

March 8, 2010 Meeting Minutes

March 8th, 2010

Present: Tim Sargent, Marcia Marble, Patti Coultas, Ted Lambert, Gary Nolan, Mary Metcalf, Phil Chiaravalle, Mel Patashnick, Jim Mahoney, Sharon Menard, Jason McArthur, Davis Koier, and Rich Furlong.

Guest: Dave Rubel, SBDC, from the Montpelier Rotary Club.

Happy dollars from: Tim ($2), Mel ($2), Dr. Phil, Jim, Patti, Gary ($5), Marcia, Davis and Jason.

Tim explained that Susan had an unexpected meeting she had to attend and our guest speaker called to cancel because of illness.

Jason gave a Polar Plunge financial report. Jason made a motion to increase the amount to Habitat for Humanity to $6000. Jim seconded the motion. It was passed unanimously.

Tim shared a fundraising idea he got from the Rotarian. We would hold a Dancing with Lamoille Valley All Stars. We would find 5-6 “stars” and charge a plate fee as an entrance. There could be wagering on the star that would win too. Tim suggested this could be in October, perhaps a harvest theme. There was a fun discussion about who would dance, and it was suggested Mel should. Mel gave another happy dollar for this club depending on his dancing ability!

Marcia asked for a motion for $25 to send as a memorial for Lester Anderson, former Morrisville Rotary President. The motion was expanded to include $1250 approved by committee for the Girl Scouts, Hospital, Morristown Recreation Committee, and the Spanish Horse Preservation. Marcia made the motion and Jim seconded it. The motion passed unanimously.

There was discussion about the RYLA program (Rotary Youth Leadership Award). We did not award one last year. It was decided to invite all schools in the region to participate and make a decision based on applications.

Ted reminded members that we had talked about the Grieg fund. In the past when the fund was making money, we were able to give interest to a local library. Now that interest rates are low, Ted suggests that we close the account and distribute the money to a library or more in the area. Dr. Phil said that he had heard that it was started as a fund for Peoples Academy. Ted asked Dr. Phil to see what he could find out. Jim said that he has never seen anything formal about this fund, that it was informally set up, and that the state also has made it easier for organizations to dispose of small funds that are not growing.

Ted also asked the members to consider using the funds that would have been used for our incoming exchange student for Andrew Calderwood, who is the student who went out on an exchange. He had to change districts and lost his support from the local club. Mary made the motion and Mel seconded it. The motion passed unanimously.

Marcia let the members know that Chris McDonnell’s Eagle Scout Ceremony will be held on March 14 at 4 pm at the VFW. We are all invited.

Gary chose a new card to be the card we will be looking for in the lottery. It will be a 4 of hearts. The ticket was then drawn, and Gary had the ticket. Tim shuffled the deck and Gary then drew the 4 of hearts! He won $12.
